Parks and Outdoor Activities

Powell Butte is a small town situated within a short distance of several county and state parks. The Crook County Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of activities for residents to enjoy any time. The annual Fishing Derby begins in May just as the weather begins to warm up, and during the summer months, the parks hold Western Daze and a carnival. Around the winter holidays, the parks hold a Halloween and New Year’s Skating party for the children. Santa’s Workshop is a big hit with kids and happens every November. The Daddy/Daughter Dance takes place annually around Valentine’s Day.

The surrounding state parks offer a number of outdoor activities, too. One of the best is Prineville Reservoir State Park. It is open year round and offers camping and fishing anytime. The park has several campsites for tents or RVs, and RV sites are complete with full hookups. A number of cabins are also available at the park. During the summer months, there is a Star Party. It includes guest speakers and activities all day, and once night falls, there is stargazing.

Powell Butte has plenty of other activities to enjoy. Hiking is a fun pastime and with all the trails around Powell Butte, residents will not get bored. Redmond and Prineville both have farmer’s markets and are less than 10 miles away. Redmond and Prineville are also home to the area’s theaters, art galleries and museums. Most entertainment and activities are open year round to accommodate the residents.

Powell Butte is home to one charter school, Powell Butte Charter School, and one elementary school, Powell Butte Elementary. Other schools in the county are located in nearby Prineville. The Crook County school district is home to one high school, one middle school and three local elementary schools. The district is also responsible for a charter school and an online school in the area.

Powell Butte and the surrounding areas enjoy a pristine location without the hustle and bustle of a large city.
